Tornedale Infant Academy

Year 1

Welcome to Dandelion class!

Welcome to Dandelion Class, led by Mrs Clarke and supported by Miss Johnson. Together, Mrs Clarke and Miss Johnson work closely to create a nurturing and inspiring environment for our 29 wonderful children—15 Boys and 14 Girls—helping each child to flourish and grow.

Both Mrs Clarke and Miss Johnson are passionate about delivering a creative curriculum that offers exciting, stimulating, and engaging activities. Their combined expertise ensures learning is always fun and hands-on, providing plenty of practical opportunities that deepen understanding and build essential skills.

Each week, children enjoy themed foundation subject lessons including art, computing, design and technology, science, history, and geography. These lessons broaden children’s knowledge and inspire curiosity across a wide range of topics.

We are also lucky to have Miss Simpson, who delivers music and religious education (RE) lessons with enthusiasm and expertise, enriching the curriculum further.

Our class benefits from a fantastic outdoor learning area, offering children many opportunities to explore, investigate, and be physically active in a natural setting. Alongside this, our continuous provision is carefully planned and regularly updated to keep it current, exciting, and engaging, allowing children to revisit and embed key skills through creative and purposeful activities.

Each day includes protected story time, nurturing a love of reading and developing language skills through carefully chosen books.

Our PE sessions are on Mondays and Tuesdays, and children come to school wearing their PE kits on these days. These sessions focus on fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and fostering a positive attitude towards physical activity.

To help children know and remember more, we have a weekly curiosity session where we look back at previous learning and connect this to new learning. We also use a floor book to help children reflect on their learning journey by revisiting past activities and achievements.

We encourage kindness, respect, and resilience to create a happy, supportive classroom community where every child feels safe and valued.

We carefully track each child’s progress to ensure they receive the support and challenge they need to thrive. Celebrating achievements big and small is an important part of our approach.

We value strong communication with families and regularly update parents on their child’s learning and development, believing that partnership with parents is key to each child’s success.

Throughout the year, we host Aspire events each term, welcoming parents to celebrate their children’s learning and work alongside them. We also hold special craft afternoons at Christmas and Easter, where families come together to enjoy creative activities.

I am excited to welcome your child to Dandelion Class and look forward to a wonderful year of learning, discovery, and fun together.
